Tech Talk: Adam
Who better to ask about locks than the knowledgeable technicians who work on them every day? This month, we’re featuring Adam. He has 12 years of experience and is certified to work on LKM and X-series locks, Von Duprin exit devices, and LCN and Herculite products.
Q: What is your favorite type of lock to repair/replace? Why?
A: I enjoy working on safes and safe locks. I like to see how things work and how things are made to lock people out of safes. There hasn’t been a lot changed over the last 50 years with safe designs. Most of the changes are in the safe locks and how they operate.
Q: What advice would you give about home locks and why?
A: Key the locks on each door alike so you don’t have to label keys or fumble around trying to figure out which one works for. Most people don’t realize they can buy locks at Home Depot and then have a locksmith rekey them alike to one key. As long as your key will go into the lock, we should be able to key them the same.
Q: What is the most memorable job you’ve completed?
A: We had a project at a large hospital requiring work on 195 doors. Hospitals have a lot of very specific requirements that must be met for anti-ligature, paths of egress and door gaps/alignment. We checked each door, made adjustments as needed and ensured proper function so that the hospital staff could safely and efficiently care for their patients.
