Tech Talk: Eric

by Stacey Simmons

Who better to ask about locks than the knowledgeable technicians who work on them every day? This month, we’re featuring Eric, a Senior Technician deservedly nicknamed “The Asset”. He has 18 years of experience, numerous certifications, and trains new technicians. In addition to standard door locks, Eric is a registered safe technician and is an expert with LKMs, X-10s, and S&G locks.

Q: What is your favorite type of lock to repair/replace? Why?
A: I like all high security related locking hardware, particularly Lockmasters LKM10K and S&G 2890 pedestrian door locks, as well as Kaba X10 locks. SCIF doors and safes are my happy place. These are well made products, meet all DoD/GSA requirements and they have amazing technical support.

Q: What advice would you give about home locks?
A: You should never skimp on your home security. It protects all that’s important in your life – your family and possessions. Invest in a good quality, Grade 1 deadbolt with a high security cylinder. You can always add additional locks and security products in the future, but a good deadbolt is a must.

Q: What is the most memorable job that you’ve completed?
A: I really enjoy working on safes and high security openings. By design, they’re made to keep people out. It’s almost like a game or puzzle to gain entry into something designed to keep you out.  Recently, I had a client with a Fichet Bauche high security safe, imported from France. The client didn’t understand why it may be time consuming to gain access. Once I had it open, with a quarter inch hole, I showed the client the internal features and thickness of the safe. The client was amazed and compared me to a doctor. I was pretty impressed myself. 🙂
