Fire Code Friday: Egress Safety
TGIFire Code Friday! 🔥 One of the most basic, yet important, points of life safety code, NFPA 101 (188.8.131.52) states that “Locks, if provided, shall NOT require the use of a key, tool, or effort for operation from the egress side.” This means occupants exiting the building should be able to open the door with one motion and will not require any special knowledge or tools.
The pictured door has panic bars, which are single motion, but the added padlock has completely negated that safety feature. In the event of a fire, the occupants could no longer exit the building with a simple push against the bars. There are safe, legal alternatives to keyed locks and we can help!
