Fire Code Friday: Single Motion Egress

by Stacey Simmons

TGIFire Code Friday! Let’s kick off the new year with one of the most basic, yet important, points of life safety code. NFPA 101 (7.2.1.5) states, “Locks, if provided, shall NOT require the use of a key, tool, or effort for operation from the egress side.” This means occupants exiting the building should be able to open the door with one motion and will not require any special knowledge or tools.

The pictured door does not meet code because occupants must engage the thumbturn before pressing the panic bar. Do you have any doors that require keys or more than one motion from the egress side? Call us ASAP to find a better solution!
